In reality, it may sometimes be easier said than done for the following reasons.
- The recipient may be offended by the bold question unless it's a kid who will usually love to tell whoever is listening what they want.
- You are too shy to ask.

So, the next best thing is to do some detective work of your own.
How to gather intel or clues
1) Ask family members or their close friends what they would like. If it is something that is out of your price range, you may consider this. Pool your resources as a group to buy it.
